Geriatrics has become a branch of study in most every specialty in recent years. From oncology to dermatology, applications of geriatric techniques in multiple fields have risen because it is increasingly apparent that the fragility of elderly bodies can greatly impact the effectiveness of care when using standard treatments. For instance, many seniors are affected by comorbidity where multiple diseases/conditions affect their bodies simultaneously, and there must be extra consideration applied to these individuals as their underlying conditions may interfere with typical practices. In addition, there is often ignorance towards the deterioration of elderly bodies as many chalk up their ailments to old age, so they do not pursue a diagnosis that may reveal abnormalities that need to be treated before they worsen. This is especially true in regards to worsening eyesight as there are many conditions such as glaucoma that are glossed over and left untreated, resulting in blindness. That is to say, specialists in geriatrics would. All in all, a geriatric understanding in each of these medical branches are increasingly prevalent and necessary as these specialists are trained to factor in the complexity of each elderly individual. Therefore, specialties in geriatrics have been created to allow seniors the opportunity to understand their health in a more personal and functional manner.
