This past week I continued my pursuit of building awareness as I built the confidence of my local geriatric residents. More specifically, I visited the facility to continue on to the next phase of the activity: planting. However, to my surprise there were multiple new residents who had missed the first activity and wanted to customize their own pots. Therefore, I set the plans for planting the basil seeds aside and enjoyed a table full of newcomers who painted their pots to their preference. Having more participants gave way to more complications such as those who wanted to paint the plates rather than the pots, but in the end we were able to set aside multiple completed pots to dry.
A few days following this activity, I got back on schedule to begin the planting portion of the project, where the residents had to individually do every step from pouring the soil to sowing the first seeds. Although some struggled with the tremors in their hands or weakness in their wrists, we powered through the spills and bumps along the way. Overall, my favorite part was the content smiles at the end as we scheduled plans for watering, and they began discussing basil recipes among themselves. I sincerely hope every one of those basil plants see the light of day.
