There is a point where research from secondary sources can only get you so far, and you need to enter a professional setting and interact with real people to guide your learning. This is due to the fact that first-hand experience is less likely to filter or sugar-coat the reality of a situation; therefore, meeting with a professional and asking them questions about their profession would allow me to get a better grasp of the working environment in geriatrics as well as the oddities I had never considered. As a result, I have been in pursuit of finding some healthcare professionals to share some of their time to help me gain a better understanding of the work that is put in behind closed doors as well as the unspoken glories or troubles they face.
A part of being successful in this endeavor is preparing how I want to introduce myself in cold calls, or calls to individuals I have never met or contacted before, so I have been considering the key components that will get my message across most effectively. For instance, being able to “hear a smile” over the phone conveys more enthusiasm and genuinity that I believe is necessary when you want to pursue a topic. In addition, it is important to keep an open mind that not all calls will be successful, but I should try where I can and make the most of every opportunity.
